The Pledge

The Pledge - Kimberly Derting This was a book I had been really looking forward to. Then for one reason or another it kept getting put off. When I finally picked it up to read it, I was really excited. I have to say that I had a hard time getting into it. I actually stopped reading it for a few days and read a different book before getting back to it. I was hoping it would be easier to get back into, but it wasn't. It wasn't that I didn't like it, it just wasn't capturing my undivided attention. It wasn't until more than half way through that I was at the point where I really, really wanted to read until the end. It was an interesting story, but I guess I just didn't feel very connected to the characters. Charlie is the MC, and don't get me wrong, I liked her, I just didn't feel that connection that I really like to have when reading a book. She is special, she can understand all the languages. Her parents are the only ones who know and they try to protect her and make sure her secret doesn't get out. She was a strong character, I just wish that I had really felt her strength more. She will do anything to protect her sister, and she goes through quite a bit just to do it. The book wasn't overly heavy on the romance, which is nice once in a while. It was a big part of the story without being overwhelming and taking over. I really liked Max. He was sweet and intriguing. I didn't know what to think of Xander, but ended up really liking him too. I look forward to getting to know the characters more in the next book. I am really hoping that I will get that connection to them that I really like to have while reading. The story was pretty slow in the beginning, and then it seemed to all burst out towards the end. I thought there would be more to the story than there was. I really enjoyed it after I got about 2/3 of the way through the book. I wish I had loved the first part of the book as much. I really wanted to absolutely love this book, and maybe at a different time I would have. I think that I wasn't in the right mind set to read this when I did. I do think that this book sets up for what comes next really well though. I am going to read it again and I am pretty sure I will like it more the second time around. I really look forward to the next book, and I hope it captures me sooner than this one did. 3.5 out of 5 stars
